Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to find out the contribution of research works focusing on religious issues in promoting Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido religious institution. The research works which were selected for this study were conducted for the partial fulfillment of Bachlor and Masters degrees in the department of Amharic Language, Literature and Folklore, Addis Ababa University. Amongst the research works focusing on religious issues specifically those on oral literature and material culture were selected purposefully. The research sites were selected using convinient sampling technique. A total of 29 research works were found. From these 12 research works were identified by using document analysis. Six are on oral literature, three are on material culture; and the rest three are focused on both material culture and oral literature. Data were organized thematically and analyzed using descriptive analysis method. The analysis showes that, the research works especially those on oral literature (narratives), mention the name of monastery being studied in the research title; this is where the contribution begins. Narratives in the oral literature researches presented ancientness or history, holiness, entirety, the miracles of the church and monasteries under study. Material culture researches focused on holy/ sacred/ objects. Mentioning the names and interpreting the symbolic significance of those objects was the focus of those researches. The analysis reveales that those research works played great role in promoting different churches and monasteries located in different areas. Therefore, the researchers of this study recommend that it is better if such trend of research will continue in the future.
