Abstract
This article presents the ups and downs of mämmhïr Esdros went through in his pursuit for knowledge and research. It presentsthe life history of mämhər Esdrosfrom childhood up to death and his education and teachings which earned him the title “arat ayna” which literally means four- eyed referring to his excellence in the four branches of the EOTC education. Data used to write about the history of the scholar were collected from chronicles and secondary sources. The analysis shows the scholar’s contribution, struggle and religious perseverance. Attempt has been exerted and care was taken to read and cross check, in as much as possible, all the available sources regarding the scholar so that there would be no mismatches of time, place, and actions regarding the scholar. As a result, I have a strong conviction that the article will promote the scholar and his historical contributions. Besides, the article will be a reason to understand the meaning of the “tač bet tərgʷame” which translates as “lower house interpretation” established by mämhər Esdros and his disciples. In his quest for research, the scholar closed his school and went to Tana Kirkos in Lake Tana (island) and read more than three hundred books, expanding his horizons of knowledge, and developed a method of interpretation called the lower house interpretation or “Yätač bet tərgʷame”, which is known for its conciseness. His interpretations are presented by the phrase “Scholar Esdros has said so,” in the commentaries whenever a different and additional interpretation he has taught has been included.
